Bai Dinh Pagoda in Ninh Binh

Bai Dinh Pagoda is the Buddhist complex most visitors to Ninh Binh put at the top of their list. It is huge, it is still a living place of worship, and it is known for a string of Asian and Vietnamese records, from its rows of stone statues to its giant bronze bells. This guide explains what you see at Bai Dinh, how the electric car works, how to combine it with Trang An and Mua Cave in one day, and what to wear, from the AmGo Travel team in Hanoi's Old Quarter.

What makes Bai Dinh special?

Bai Dinh is one of the most famous pagodas in Vietnam and is often described as the largest temple complex in the country. The scale is what surprises most people: long covered corridors, wide courtyards and halls that climb the hillside one after another. These are the highlights you should not miss:

  • The 500 Arhats: hundreds of stone statues of Arhats, the enlightened disciples of the Buddha, line the corridors. Each face is different, and walking past them is one of the most memorable parts of the visit.
  • The bell tower: it holds two enormous bronze bells, weighing 27 tons and 36 tons.
  • The Goddess of Mercy: a golden statue of Quan Am, the Bodhisattva of compassion, that many Vietnamese visitors come to pray to.
  • Views over Ninh Binh: from the upper terraces you look out over limestone hills and green fields.

Because Bai Dinh is an active pagoda, you share it with pilgrims and families who come to light incense and pray. That is part of the experience.

Getting around the complex: the electric car

The pagoda grounds are large, and the car park is a long way from the main halls. Visitors ride an electric car between the entrance area and the pagoda. On our Bai Dinh tours the electric car is included both ways, so you do not need to buy tickets or queue at a counter.

Inside, you still walk a good deal: through the Arhat corridors, up steps between the halls and around the courtyards. Wear comfortable shoes and allow about an hour and a half to see the main sights without rushing.

Bai Dinh and Trang An in one day

Most people visit Bai Dinh together with Trang An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site a short drive away. Here is how our day tour flows:

  • Pick-up in Hanoi's Old Quarter by shuttle bus or limousine, your choice. The exact time is confirmed after booking, and drinking water is on board both ways.
  • Bai Dinh Pagoda in the morning, with the electric car in and out.
  • Premium buffet lunch at Trang An Eco Restaurant.
  • Trang An by boat: follow the water through limestone cliffs, quiet green fields and caves such as Sang, Toi, Ba Giot and Nau Ruou.
  • Back to Hanoi in the evening, with drop-off in the Old Quarter.

The tour also includes a guide for the whole day, sport bicycles for a ride through the Ninh Binh countryside, and a raincoat or conical hat depending on the weather.

Add Mua Cave, or stay the night

If you have energy for one more stop, choose the version of the tour that adds Mua Cave. You climb more than 500 steps up Ngoa Long Mountain to a panorama over Ninh Binh and the Ngo Dong River winding through the fields. It is the classic sunset photo of the region. Read our Mua Cave viewpoint guide before you go.

If you prefer a slower pace, the 2-day tour spends day one at Bai Dinh and Trang An, with a night in a pool bungalow at Trang An Holiday Retreat. On day two you visit Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of the Dinh and Le dynasties, take a boat through Tam Coc and finish with the Mua Cave climb.

What to wear and how to behave

Bai Dinh is a sacred place, and a few simple habits make the visit easier for everyone:

  • Cover shoulders and knees. A light shirt with sleeves and long trousers or a long skirt work well, even on hot days.
  • Take off your hat and speak quietly inside the halls.
  • Ask before photographing people who are praying.
  • Do not touch or climb on the statues, even for a photo.
  • Bring water and sun protection. The courtyards are open and can be hot at midday.

When to visit Bai Dinh

  • Spring, especially around Lunar New Year, is pilgrimage season. The pagoda is festive and very busy, with crowds of Vietnamese families.
  • Autumn and early winter bring mild, dry weather and fewer crowds, which makes for comfortable walking.
  • Summer is hot. Start early and save the shady corridors for midday.

Note that our tours carry a holiday surcharge on New Year, Lunar New Year (Tet), 30 April to 1 May, Hung Kings Commemoration Day (29 April) and 2 September, when demand is highest.
