Mua Cave, Ninh Binh: The 500-Step Climb and Viewpoint
What the 500-step climb up Mua Cave is like, the view over the Ngo Dong River, and which Ninh Binh day tours from Hanoi include it, with tips for the climb.

Mua Cave is home to the most famous view in Ninh Binh. The cave itself is small; the reason people come is the climb of more than 500 stone steps up Ngoa Long Mountain, the "Sleeping Dragon", to a viewpoint over the Ngo Dong River winding through rice fields and limestone peaks. This guide explains what the climb is like, which day tours from Hanoi include it, and how to fit it in with Trang An, Tam Coc, Hoa Lu or Bai Dinh. It comes from the AmGo Travel team in Hanoi's Old Quarter, who run Ninh Binh day trips every day.

Mua Cave at a glance
- Where: Ninh Binh province, south of Hanoi, close to Tam Coc.
- The climb: more than 500 steps to the top of Ngoa Long Mountain.
- The name: Mua means "dance" in Vietnamese.
- The reward: a panorama over Ninh Binh, with the Ngo Dong River snaking through the fields below.
- How to visit: on a day tour from Hanoi that combines it with other Ninh Binh sights, or on a 2-day trip.
What the climb is like
The path starts near the small cave at the foot of the mountain and climbs as a stone staircase up the side of Ngoa Long. There are more than 500 steps, some steep and uneven, so take your time and stop to rest on the way. Near the top, a stone dragon winds along the ridge, which gives the mountain its name.
At the summit you look out over the landscape Ninh Binh is famous for: karst peaks rising from flat rice fields, and the Ngo Dong River, the same river that flows through the caves of Tam Coc, curling between them. On a clear day you can follow boats moving along the water far below.

When to go up
On our day tours, Mua Cave comes at the end of the day, after lunch and the boat ride. That timing works in your favour: the afternoon light is softer for photos than the midday sun, and you finish the day with the view rather than with a long walk still ahead. The colour of the fields changes with the rice season, so the panorama looks different from one month to the next.
Which day tour includes Mua Cave?
Mua Cave is usually the last stop of a Ninh Binh day trip, after lunch. Our day tours from Hanoi pair it with different sights, so the choice depends on what else you want to see:
- Hoa Lu, Tam Coc and Mua Cave. Hoa Lu, Vietnam's capital in the 10th century under the Dinh and Le dynasties, then the river caves of Tam Coc, the "Ha Long Bay on land". Tam Coc means "three caves". This is the natural pair: from the top of Mua you look down on the river you just travelled.
- Hoa Lu, Trang An and Mua Cave. Hoa Lu's temples, then the water route through Trang An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, passing caves such as Sang, Toi, Ba Giot and Nau Ruou.
- Bai Dinh, Trang An and Mua Cave. Bai Dinh Pagoda, with its 500 stone Arhats, bronze bells of 27 and 36 tons and golden statue of the Goddess of Mercy, reached by electric car, then Trang An and the Mua climb.
All three include round-trip transfer from Hanoi's Old Quarter (shuttle bus or limousine; a 9–11-seat Dcar on some), a premium buffet lunch at Trang An Eco Restaurant, a guide, sport bicycles, a raincoat or conical hat depending on the weather, and drinking water on the bus.

Staying a night in Ninh Binh
If you prefer a slower pace, our 2-day trip does Hoa Lu, Tam Coc and Mua Cave on day 1, with a night in a bungalow with a pool at Trang An Holiday Retreat. Day 2 is spent in Cuc Phuong, Vietnam's first national park, established in 1962: old-growth tropical forest on limestone hills, with ancient trees and rich wildlife.

Tips for climbing Mua Cave
- Wear proper shoes. Sandals with grip or trainers are better than flip-flops on stone steps.
- Bring water. There is drinking water on the bus, but carry a bottle up the mountain, especially on hot days.
- Take it slowly. The steps are steep in places. Rest on the way; there is no rush to reach the top.
- Watch the weather. In rain the steps can be slippery. The tours provide a raincoat or a conical hat depending on the weather.
- Bring cash for drinks, as only water on the bus is included.
- Children: on the day tours, children 1–4 travel free sharing a seat with their parents, and children 5–8 pay 75% of the adult price (one child with two adults). Think about whether young children can manage 500 steps.
