Trang An or Tam Coc? Compare caves, rice fields, boat rides and crowds to choose the right Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi, with tips from our local team.

Trang An or Tam Coc? It is the first question almost everyone asks when they plan a Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi. Both are boat rides through the same limestone country, both are rowed by locals, and both are about two hours' drive south of Hanoi. But they feel different, and the right one depends on what you want from your day. Here is an honest comparison from the AmGo Travel team, who plan Ninh Binh trips from our office in Hanoi's Old Quarter.

Trang An vs Tam Coc at a glance
- Trang An: the bigger, wilder boat route, inside the Trang An Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Several caves, small temples on the water and karst walls all around. Best for scenery and a longer, quieter ride.
- Tam Coc: a shorter, gentler ride along the Ngo Dong River through three caves, with rice fields on both banks. Best for rice-field views, photography in the harvest season and a relaxed pace.
- Both: small rowing boats, a local rower, and limestone peaks rising straight out of the water. Many rowers paddle with their feet, which is a sight in itself.
Trang An: caves, temples and UNESCO scenery
Trang An is the reason Ninh Binh is often called "Ha Long Bay on land". The boat route loops through a maze of rivers and flooded valleys, passing under low caves where you duck your head and the rower steers by memory. On our Trang An day tours the route passes caves such as Sang, Toi, Ba Giot and Nau Ruou, with stops at temples built on the water.
What we like about Trang An:
- The landscape feels bigger and more enclosed, like a hidden valley.
- More caves and more variety on one ride.
- It is a protected heritage area, so the banks stay green and calm.
Good to know: the Trang An ride is the longer of the two and you sit in the boat for most of it. Bring a hat and sun cream, because there is little shade between the caves.

Tam Coc: rice fields and three caves
"Tam Coc" means "three caves", and the boat ride follows the Ngo Dong River through all three. The river runs between rice paddies, with karst peaks on either side, so the view is greener and more open than at Trang An. It is the classic Ninh Binh postcard.
What we like about Tam Coc:
- The rice fields: from late May to early June the paddies turn golden before the harvest, and it is the most photogenic time of year in Ninh Binh.
- A shorter, easy ride, good for families and anyone who does not want to sit in a boat for long.
- It pairs well with cycling through the villages around it.
Good to know: Tam Coc can be busier on weekends and Vietnamese holidays, and outside the rice season the fields can be bare or flooded.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Trang An if:
- It is your first time in Ninh Binh and you want the most impressive scenery.
- You love caves and do not mind a longer boat ride.
- You visit outside the rice season.
Choose Tam Coc if:
- You travel between late May and early June, or in the green months that follow planting.
- You want rice-field photos and a shorter, gentler ride.
- You travel with young children or older relatives.
Still can't decide? Add Mua Cave. Whichever river you pick, the climb of more than 500 stone steps up Ngoa Long Mountain at Hang Mua gives you the view over both worlds: the Ngo Dong River winding through rice fields, with karsts to the horizon. Go in the afternoon when the light is softer, and take water.

Hoa Lu: the ancient capital
Most Ninh Binh day trips start at Hoa Lu, Vietnam's capital in the 10th century. You visit the temples of the Dinh and Le kings, set against the same limestone hills. It is a short, easy stop that gives the scenery a story, and it sits on the way to both Trang An and Tam Coc.

How a Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi works
- Pick-up: in the Hanoi Old Quarter in the morning. The exact time and meeting point are confirmed after you book.
- Drive: about two hours each way, by shuttle bus, limousine van or a smaller 9–11 seat car.
- The day: Hoa Lu, a buffet lunch, then your boat ride at Trang An or Tam Coc, with bicycles for a ride through the countryside. Some tours add Mua Cave or Bai Dinh Pagoda.
- Back in Hanoi: in the evening, with drop-off in the Old Quarter.
Tips for a better day in Ninh Binh
- Wear shoes with grip if you plan to climb Mua Cave; the steps are steep and can be slippery after rain.
- Bring cash for drinks and a tip for your rower.
- Cover up for the temples: shoulders and knees covered at Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh.
- Avoid public holidays if you can: Lunar New Year and the 30 April–1 May break are the busiest days, and prices are higher.
- Stay a night if you have time. A 2-day trip lets you see both Trang An and Tam Coc, and the evening light over the karsts is worth it.
