Lantern boats on the Hoi An river at twilight
Destinations

Hoi An

Lantern-lit lanes on the Thu Bon River, with temples and islands close by.

For centuries Hoi An was a busy trading port on the Thu Bon River, where Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese merchants built their houses, assembly halls and the famous covered bridge. The Ancient Town is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, and in the evening its lanes glow with silk lanterns.

Hoi An is also a base for the countryside and the coast: the Cham temples of My Son Sanctuary, another UNESCO site, lie inland; basket boats float in the coconut palms of Cam Thanh; and offshore, the Cham Islands are a UNESCO biosphere reserve with clear water for swimming and snorkelling.

Best time to go

February to April is usually pleasant and fairly dry; May to August is hot; heavy rain, and sometimes flooding in the old town, is most likely from about October to December.

What it feels like

  • Wandering the old town as the lanterns come on
  • Snorkelling in the clear water off the Cham Islands
  • Walking among the red-brick Cham towers of My Son
