Is an Overnight Ha Long Bay Cruise Worth It?

Day trip or a night on the bay? An honest comparison of Ha Long Bay day cruises and 2-day, 1-night cruises: time on the road, what you see, and who should stay overnight.

An overnight cruise among the limestone islands of Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is the trip almost every visitor to northern Vietnam wants to make, and the first question is usually the same: is a day trip enough, or is it worth spending a night on the bay? This guide compares the two honestly, using real cruise schedules, and explains who gets the most from an overnight cruise. It comes from the AmGo Travel team in Hanoi's Old Quarter, who book Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay cruises every day.

The short answer

Yes, if you can spare the time. An overnight cruise turns one afternoon on the bay into nearly a full day on the water, takes the pressure off the long drive from Hanoi, and gives you the parts of Ha Long Bay a day trip cannot: sunset and evening on the water, and an early morning on the bay. A day trip is a good choice when you only have one day for Ha Long, but it is a long day.

Day trip vs overnight cruise: what really changes

Time on the road vs time on the water

Ha Long Bay is about 3 hours from Hanoi by expressway. On a typical day cruise, pick-up in the Old Quarter is around 8:00–8:45, you board at Tuan Chau, see the bay through the afternoon, reach the harbour again around 18:00 and are back at your hotel around 21:00. That is roughly 6 hours on the road for one afternoon on the bay.

On a 2-day, 1-night cruise, the drive is the same, but it is spread over two days. You board around lunchtime on day 1 and leave the boat late morning on day 2, with an afternoon, an evening and a morning on the water in between.

What you see

Both options visit the classic sights, so the overnight cruise is not about seeing more famous places. Day cruises typically include lunch past Fighting Cock and Incense Burner islets, Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave, kayaking or a bamboo boat, and Titop Island. Overnight cruises cover similar ground at a slower pace, and add stops such as a pearl farm or a second cave on the morning of day 2, depending on the boat.

What only an overnight cruise gives you

  • Sunset on the bay. Many boats hold a happy hour or sunset party on the sundeck.
  • An evening on board. Dinner, then squid fishing, karaoke, films or just the sundeck.
  • Early morning on the water. Tai Chi on the sundeck at dawn on several boats, then breakfast among the islands.
  • A slower rhythm. No rush to get back on the bus by late afternoon.

What a typical overnight cruise looks like

Here is how the Mila Cruise (4-star) runs, as an example:

  • Day 1: pick-up at your Hanoi hotel at 8:30, check-in at the Tuan Chau Marina lounge, lunch while passing Incense Burner, Stone Dog, Fighting Cock and Three Coconuts islets, a pearl farm and kayaking, Sung Sot Cave, a cooking demonstration on the sundeck, happy hour at sunset and dinner. In the evening: bar, spa, squid fishing or a film in your cabin.
  • Day 2: Tai Chi on the sundeck, coffee and pastries, Titop Island to swim or hike to the viewpoint, then brunch while cruising back. You disembark around 11:30 and are back in Hanoi around 14:30.

Other boats vary the route. The 3-star Fantasea adds kayaking with locals at Trong Cave on day 2, and the Calypso cruises through to Lan Ha Bay, with the Dark and Bright cave by sampan or kayak, a rooftop pool and Trung Trang Cave in Cat Ba National Park.

Who should choose an overnight cruise?

  • Couples and honeymooners. An evening and sunrise on the bay are the reason to go. On overnight cruises booked with us, we can also arrange a birthday or anniversary celebration with a cake and a decorated cabin; just tell us when you book.
  • Families. The pace is easier on children than a 13-hour day trip. On some boats, children under 5 join free.
  • Photographers. Sunset and early morning light are only possible if you stay.
  • Anyone with 2 days to spare. If Ha Long is a highlight of your trip, it deserves more than an afternoon.

When a day trip makes more sense

  • You only have one free day in the north.
  • You are on a tight budget and prefer to spend it elsewhere.
  • You get seasick easily or are not keen on sleeping on a boat.

Our guide to the Ha Long Bay day trip from Hanoi covers that option in detail.

Tips for choosing your boat

  • Star rating describes the boat: cabins, food and facilities. Routes differ from boat to boat, so compare the itineraries too.
  • Ha Long or Lan Ha? Some boats, such as Calypso, cruise on to Lan Ha Bay and add Cat Ba National Park. Our Ha Long Bay vs Lan Ha Bay guide compares the two.
  • Groups of three can book a triple cabin on boats such as Fantasea, which avoids the single supplement.
  • Weather. Activities such as swimming and kayaking depend on the weather on the day.
