A Ha Long Bay day trip from Hanoi is the easiest way to see Vietnam's most famous seascape when your time is short. But is it worth a long day on the road? The AmGo Travel team in Hanoi's Old Quarter runs these day cruises every day, so here is an honest look at how the day works, what you see on the water, and who should choose an overnight cruise instead.

How a Ha Long Bay day trip from Hanoi works

The schedule is similar on most day cruises we offer:

  • 7:45 to 8:45: pick-up at your hotel lobby or a meeting point in Hanoi's Old Quarter (some boats also pick up near the Opera House).
  • About 2.5 to 3 hours on the expressway to the coast, with a short break on the way.
  • Around midday: board the boat at Tuan Chau or the Ha Long international cruise port, with a welcome drink and a briefing.
  • About six hours on the bay: lunch while cruising, then two or three stops.
  • Around 18:00 to 18:30: back at the harbour, then the drive back.
  • About 21:00 to 21:30: drop-off at your hotel in Hanoi.

So yes, it is a long day: roughly 13 hours door to door, with five to six of them in a vehicle. The expressway makes it far easier than it used to be, and the time on the water is real, not a quick photo stop.

What you see on the water

The classic day cruise route includes:

  • Lunch among the islets. Boats pass famous islets such as Fighting Cock and Incense Burner while you eat. Depending on the boat, lunch is a buffet or a set menu.
  • Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave. About an hour on foot through one of the largest caves in Ha Long Bay, full of stalactites and stalagmites.
  • Luon Cave by kayak or bamboo boat. Paddle yourself, or let a local row you through the cave into a hidden lagoon enclosed by cliffs.
  • Titop Island. Swim at the beach or climb to the top for the classic panoramic photo of the bay.
  • Sunset party. On the way back, most boats serve tea, fruit and snacks, often with wine, on the sundeck.

Some routes also stop at a pearl farm before boarding, where you see how pearls are cultivated in the bay. The order of the stops can change on the day with the weather and the bay's management rules.

Choosing a day cruise: what actually differs

All the day cruises follow a similar route, so the choice comes down to the boat and what is included:

  • The boat. Newer 5-star day boats like Selina Cruise 168 and Alina Cruise 99 have a Jacuzzi pool, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi in the restaurant area. Sky of the Sea has a swimming pool on deck. Reina Cruise is a new steel boat launched in 2025.
  • Lunch. Buffet (Asian and European on some boats) or a set menu. Selina Cruise 168 offers an Indian set menu on request.
  • Kayak or bamboo boat. Included on most boats, but a few charge a small extra fee. Check the "included" list on the tour page.
  • Transfer. Shuttle bus is standard; some cruises offer a limousine upgrade, or a cruise-only price if you make your own way to the port.

If you want the bay with the fewest compromises in one day, pick a newer boat with a pool. If you mostly care about the caves and the view, a standard 4-star day cruise covers the same stops.

Day trip or overnight cruise?

A day trip is worth it if:

  • You only have one free day in northern Vietnam.
  • You are happy with the main sights: Sung Sot, Titop and Luon Cave.
  • You prefer to sleep in your Hanoi hotel.

Choose an overnight cruise if:

  • You can spare two days. The drive is the same, but you get sunset, sunrise and a calm evening on the water.
  • You want to reach quieter areas like Lan Ha Bay. Read our comparison of Ha Long Bay vs Lan Ha Bay for the differences.
  • You travel with young children or older relatives who would find a 13-hour day tiring.

Tips for your day

  • Eat breakfast early or bring a snack. Breakfast is not included, though there is a short stop on the way.
  • Bring swimwear for Titop, plus a hat and sun cream. Towels are provided on some boats.
  • Wear shoes with grip for the cave steps and the climb on Titop.
  • Bring cash for drinks on board, which are usually extra, and for tips.
  • Children's prices usually depend on age: under-5s often travel free when sharing a seat, and 5 to 8-year-olds pay a reduced price. Each tour page lists the exact rules.
