Mai Chau lies about 150 km west of Hanoi in a valley with ideal conditions for growing rice, the main livelihood here. Rice from the valley is sold in Hoa Binh, Hanoi and beyond, and the landscape of paddies and stilt-house villages is one of the calmest in the north.
