Mai Chau Day Trip from Hanoi: Market, Pass and Village Cycling
What a Mai Chau day trip from Hanoi looks like: a Muong market, Thung Khe Pass, lunch in the valley and cycling through the villages, plus when to choose Pu Luong.
By AmGo Travel4 min read

Mai Chau is a green valley of rice fields and villages about 150 km west of Hanoi, and it is one of the easiest ways to see rural northern Vietnam without a long trip to the mountains. A day trip takes you through a local market, over a mountain pass and around the valley by bike. This guide explains what the day looks like hour by hour, what to bring and when it is worth staying longer in Pu Luong instead. It comes from the AmGo Travel team in Hanoi's Old Quarter, who run trips to Mai Chau and Pu Luong.

What to expect, step by step
Morning: the road west
Your guide collects you from your hotel at 7:30 for the drive out of Hanoi, with a 20-minute break around 10:00. As the city falls behind, the landscape turns to hills and fields.
A Muong market and Thung Khe Pass
The first stop is a local market of the Muong people, one of the ethnic groups of the region. It is a chance to see daily life and customs: what people buy, sell and eat.
Next comes Thung Khe Pass, one of Vietnam's most scenic mountain passes, with wide views over the hills before you drop into the valley.
Lunch in Mai Chau
In the valley you sit down to a traditional Vietnamese lunch. Drinks are not included, so bring a little cash if you want something beyond water.
Cycling through the villages
The highlight for most people is the bike ride with a local guide. You ride along village paths past farmers working in the rice fields and locals weaving scarves, and visit the quiet villages around the valley. The bicycle is included.

Back to Hanoi
In the afternoon you board the bus back to Hanoi and are dropped at your Old Quarter hotel around 19:30.
Is a Mai Chau day trip worth it?
Yes, if you want countryside and village life in a single day. It suits travellers who have one free day in Hanoi and have already seen the city, or who want a quieter alternative to the busy day trips to Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh.
Keep in mind that it is a long day: about 12 hours from pick-up to drop-off, with much of the morning on the road. If you prefer more time in the villages and less in the bus, consider an overnight trip.

Mai Chau or Pu Luong?
Pu Luong Nature Reserve lies in the same region, about 4 hours from Hanoi, and is best done over 2 days and 1 night. Our Pu Luong trip includes:
- A village trek past terraced rice paddies, hills and stilt houses, with a stop at a spring.
- Silk weaving with a Thai family in Lan village, from cocoon to cloth, where you can try weaving yourself.
- The ancient waterwheels of Chieu Lau village.
- A 4 km walk to Cham Stream and a bamboo raft with lunch on board.
- A night in a hotel with a swimming pool.
You can end the Pu Luong trip in Hanoi or in Ninh Binh, which makes it easy to continue south.
Choose Mai Chau if you have one day. Choose Pu Luong if you have two days and want trekking and a slower pace.

What to bring

- A hat, sunscreen and a rain layer, since much of the day is outdoors.
- Cash in dong for drinks and small purchases at the market or from weavers.
- Insect repellent for the fields.
- For Pu Luong in warm weather, a swimsuit and towel for the stream.
Travel insurance is not included on the Mai Chau trip, so make sure your own policy covers cycling.
