A day boat among the limestone islands of Lan Ha Bay

A Lan Ha Bay day trip from Hanoi takes you to the quieter southern side of the Ha Long Bay karst country, around Cat Ba Island. You cruise among hundreds of limestone islands, pass a floating fishing village, kayak and swim, and visit a village on Cat Ba, all in one long day. This guide compares the two ways to do it, explains the timings and helps you decide if a day is enough, from the AmGo Travel team in Hanoi's Old Quarter.

Why Lan Ha Bay for a day trip?

Lan Ha Bay sits next to Ha Long Bay, off the south-east of Cat Ba Island in Hai Phong. The scenery is the same family of green karst islands rising from the sea, but fewer boats go there, the water is often calmer and there are small beaches you can swim from. If you want to compare the two bays in detail, read our guide to Ha Long Bay vs Lan Ha Bay.

For a day trip, Lan Ha has one big advantage: the activities. Instead of just cruising and visiting one cave, you get time on the water and on land, with kayaking, swimming, a village on Cat Ba and a fishing village on the water.

Two ways to do a Lan Ha Bay day trip

The classic day trip: Cai Beo, Viet Hai and kayaking

  • Pick-up from your hotel in Hanoi's Old Quarter between 7:00 and 7:30, then the drive to Cat Ba Island.
  • Coastal drive from Cai Vieng port to Beo harbour, then a welcome drink on board while the guide explains the day.
  • Cai Beo fishing village: the boat cruises slowly past Cai Beo, an ancient fishing village of floating houses said to be 7,000 years old, then heads into the heart of the bay.
  • Lunch on board of seafood, meat and Vietnamese rice, among hundreds of islands.
  • Viet Hai village: land at Viet Hai and ride a bicycle or electric car to the old village. Try a fish foot massage, walk among traditional houses and chat with locals.
  • Kayaking and swimming: the captain picks the best spot for swimming, boat jumping, sliding from the top deck and kayaking. Life jackets are worn for water activities.
  • Sunset on the top deck with fruit, biscuits and tea at 16:15. Back at Beo pier at 16:45 and in Hanoi's Old Quarter around 20:30.

The premium catamaran day cruise

  • Pick-up from your hotel in Hanoi's Old Quarter between 7:15 and 7:40, with a refreshment stop around 9:00.
  • Ferry and coastal drive: a ferry ride past floating fishing villages and one of the world's tallest sea-crossing cable cars, then a coastal drive with sea and mountain views.
  • Catamaran cruise through Lan Ha Bay with a welcome drink.
  • Seafood buffet with views of Cai Beo fishing village and Turtle Islet.
  • Cycling to Viet Hai through jungle and rice fields, with a fish foot spa in the village.
  • Kayaking and beach time: paddle to hidden caves, relax on a quiet beach, or jump from the boat, bounce on the floating trampoline and ride the water slides.
  • Sunset party on the beach with music and cocktails, then back to Beo pier and your hotel in Hanoi.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose the classic day trip for a relaxed day with the floating village, Viet Hai and plenty of water time, with the option of an electric car instead of a bike.
  • Choose the premium catamaran if you want a more modern boat, a seafood buffet, more water toys and a beach party at sunset.

Both include the round-trip transfer from Hanoi, lunch, kayaking, entrance fees and a guide. Drinks at the bar and tips are extra.

Is a day trip to Lan Ha Bay worth it?

Be honest with yourself about the timing. It is a long day: you leave Hanoi around 7:00 and get back around 20:30 on the classic trip. Most of the travel is on the highway and the coastal road, and the scenery on the way to Cat Ba is part of the experience.

A day trip is a good choice if:

  • You have only one free day for the bay.
  • You prefer active time (kayaking, swimming, cycling) to a night on board.
  • You are happy with a long day and an evening return.

If you can spare a night, a 2-day cruise lets you see the bay at sunset and sunrise. On the Calypso cruise, for example, you explore the Dark and Bright cave by sampan or kayak, swim in a rooftop pool, join a spring-roll cooking demonstration and Tai Chi at dawn, and visit Trung Trang Cave in Cat Ba National Park.

Tips for your Lan Ha Bay day

  • Send your passport details on time. The classic trip needs your full name, date of birth and nationality at least 24 hours before departure for the port authority declaration.
  • Ask for vegetarian food at least one day in advance.
  • Wear your swimsuit under your clothes and bring a towel and a change of clothes.
  • Bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. The top deck and kayaks are in full sun.
  • Expect weather changes. The itinerary can change with the weather, and in bad weather swimming or kayaking may not be possible.
  • Bring cash for drinks and tips.

When to go

Lan Ha Bay can be visited all year. Summer is hot and the best time for swimming and slides, but it is also the season when storms can change plans. Spring and autumn are pleasant, and winter is cool, with water activities less tempting. Avoid Vietnamese public holidays if you can, when the roads and harbours are busiest.
