Berths on a sleeper bus from Hanoi to Sapa

Getting from Hanoi to Sapa is easier than ever: an expressway now runs most of the way, and buses leave the Old Quarter every morning and night. The real question is which kind of bus to take. This guide compares the sleeper bus, the VIP cabin bus and the limousine van, explains pick-up, journey time and what to expect on board, and covers the train for those who prefer rails. It comes from the AmGo Travel team in Hanoi's Old Quarter, who book these buses for travellers heading to Sapa every day.

Sleeper bus, VIP cabin or limousine?

Sleeper bus

The standard sleeper bus has 40 berths in rows, on two levels. Each berth is a reclining bed with a blanket, so you can lie back for the whole trip. A front berth on the lower deck is easier to get in and out of. This is the simplest and most common way to travel.

VIP cabin bus

The cabin bus has 24 cabins, each a private compartment with its own bed, so you get more privacy than in an open berth. Single cabins are on the upper deck; double cabins on the lower deck are made for couples or a parent with a child. On the return trip, the VIP cabin bus drops you at your hotel in the Old Quarter, while the sleeper bus stops at 204 Tran Quang Khai, about 1 km from the Old Quarter.

Limousine (Dcar)

A limousine is a smaller van with large reclining seats rather than beds. You can choose a seat next to the driver, a back-row seat or a VIP seat. It suits travellers who prefer to sit upright and travel in a smaller group.

Which one to choose? For a night trip or if you want to sleep, a berth or cabin. For privacy, especially as a couple, the double cabin. For a short daytime ride sitting up, the limousine.

What the journey looks like

If you book the round trip with us, the morning sleeper bus picks you up in Hanoi at 06:00 to 06:45 and reaches Sapa after about 5 hours on the highway, in time for lunch. On the way back, the bus leaves Sapa at 15:00 to 15:30 and arrives in Hanoi at 21:00 to 21:30.

There is a rest stop of about 30 minutes each way. Meals and drinks at the stop are not included, so bring a little cash in dong.

If you travel on the night bus, you arrive early in Sapa; on some of our tours a breakfast can be added for night-bus guests.

Bus or train?

The train from Hanoi does not go to Sapa itself: it runs to Lao Cai, near the border, and from there you continue by road up the mountain to Sapa. It suits travellers who like rail journeys, but it takes longer than the bus and you need that extra transfer at the end.

The bus goes straight to Sapa town with hotel pick-up, which is why most travellers choose it. If you would still like the train, ask us and we will check availability for your date. For other routes around the country, see our guide to getting around Vietnam.

Tips for the trip

  • Book a few days ahead in busy seasons, especially for double cabins and front berths, which are limited.
  • Shoes off on board. Sleeper buses usually ask you to take off your shoes; bring a plastic bag for them.
  • Keep a jacket handy. The air-conditioning can be cold, and Sapa is cooler than Hanoi, especially at night.
  • Pack light. Luggage goes in the hold; keep valuables, water and a snack with you.
  • Children: bus tickets are charged at the adult price for every age, since each passenger needs a berth or seat.
  • Plan your first afternoon. On our Sapa land tours, the guide meets the morning bus at the Sapa bus station around 13:00 to 13:30 and starts with Cat Cat village after lunch.

Combining the bus with a Sapa tour

Our Sapa treks are land tours that start in Sapa, so the bus is booked separately. That gives you a choice: a night in a town hotel with Cat Cat village and the Lao Chai – Ta Van valley trek, or a night in a village homestay in the Muong Hoa valley. Read our Sapa trekking guide to choose a route.
