Bac Ha Sunday Market: When to Go and How to Get There
Bac Ha is the northern highlands' best-known Sunday market. When to go, how to get there from Sapa and Hanoi, what you will see and three ways to plan the weekend.

Bac Ha is one of the best-known markets of Vietnam's northern highlands, and the reason most people go is simple: on Sunday, people from the surrounding hill villages come down to buy and sell, many of them Flower H'mong in brightly embroidered clothes. This guide explains when to go, how to get there from Sapa and Hanoi, what you will see and how to plan a weekend around it. It comes from the AmGo Travel team in Hanoi's Old Quarter, who organise Sapa and Bac Ha trips every week.

When is Bac Ha market?
Sunday is the main market day, and that is when Bac Ha is at its liveliest. Plan your trip so that you are in Bac Ha on a Sunday: on other days you will not see the market at its best.
Because of this, the multi-day tours are built backwards from Sunday:
- The 2-day tour departs every Saturday and spends Sunday at the market.
- The 3-day tour departs every Friday, adds a valley trek on Saturday, and also ends at the market on Sunday.
- The one-day trip from Sapa runs on selected dates; ask us which dates it runs before you plan the rest of your trip.
What you will see at the market
Bac Ha is a working market, not a show for visitors. People trade what the highlands produce and what highland households need:
- Highland produce brought in from the hill villages.
- Fabrics and crafts, from everyday cloth to the embroidery the region is known for.
- Household goods: the everyday things families come to market to buy.
The highlight for most visitors is simply watching the trading and the crowd. The brightly embroidered clothes of the Flower H'mong are the image most people take home.

Market etiquette
- Ask before you photograph someone, especially close up. A smile and a gesture towards your camera usually works, and a guide can help.
- Buy something if you take time at a stall. A small purchase is the best way to say thank you.
- Bring a layer and good shoes. Mountain weather changes quickly, and ground can be muddy after rain.
How to get to Bac Ha
Bac Ha trips with AmGo Travel start and end in Sapa town. Getting from Hanoi to Sapa is a separate step, which we can book for you.
Hanoi to Sapa by bus. Sleeper buses and VIP cabin buses run in the morning and at night, take about 5.5 to 6 hours including a 30-minute rest stop, and pick you up at your hotel in Hanoi's Old Quarter (or from the bus point at 204 Tran Quang Khai Street if you stay outside it). In Sapa they collect you from your hotel in the town centre for the return. Other options include a Limousine van and the train to Lao Cai; ask us and we will check what is available for your dates.
Night bus tip. A night bus from Hanoi gets you to Sapa in the morning, so you can join the first day of a tour without losing a day. Guests arriving on the night bus can add breakfast.
From Sapa, the tour takes you to Bac Ha and back, so you do not need to arrange the road to the market yourself.
Planning a weekend: three ways to see Bac Ha
1. Weekend in Sapa: 2 days, 1 night (Saturday to Sunday)
Meet your group in Sapa town on Saturday and walk down to Cat Cat, a H'mong village, to learn about local customs and see Cat Cat waterfall and the hydroelectric plant built by the French in the early 20th century. Sleep in a Sapa hotel in the class you choose (3-star, 4-star or 5-star), then spend Sunday at Bac Ha market. This is the shortest way to combine Sapa and the market.

2. Long weekend: 3 days, 2 nights (Friday to Sunday)
Cat Cat village on Friday, then on Saturday a trek to Y Linh Ho village and on through the rice terraces along the Muong Hoa stream to Lao Chai, a Black H'mong village, and Ta Van, home to Black H'mong, Dzao and Dzay people, with the Hoang Lien Son range all around. Sunday is Bac Ha market. Two nights in a Sapa hotel. If you want a real taste of Sapa trekking as well as the market, this is the one to choose.

3. Day trip from Sapa
Already in Sapa? The one-day trip goes from Sapa to Bac Ha and back, with meals included. It suits travellers on a longer Sapa stay who want to add the market on the right day.
