Limestone islands rising from the water in Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay vs Lan Ha Bay is the question we hear most from travellers planning a cruise from Hanoi. The two bays sit side by side in the same limestone seascape, and many boats even start from the same harbour. But the stops, the pace and the feel of the day are quite different. This guide from the AmGo Travel team in Hanoi's Old Quarter compares them stop by stop, using the routes our own cruises follow.

Ha Long Bay vs Lan Ha Bay at a glance

  • Ha Long Bay: the famous, classic route. Big caves like Sung Sot, the viewpoint and beach on Titop Island, and the islets that appear on every postcard, such as Fighting Cock and Incense Burner. More boats, more people, and the easiest logistics.
  • Lan Ha Bay: the quieter neighbour to the south, next to Cat Ba Island. Lagoons for kayaking, floating fishing villages, Viet Hai village on Cat Ba, and fewer boats around you.
  • Both: limestone karsts rising from green water, kayaking or bamboo boats, lunch on board and a sunset party on deck.

Ha Long Bay: the classic stops

Most Ha Long Bay routes are built around three or four famous places. On our day cruises and many overnight cruises you will see:

  • Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave on Bo Hon Island, one of the largest caves in the bay, with huge chambers full of stalactites and stalagmites. Plan on about an hour on foot inside.
  • Titop Island, where you can swim at the sandy beach or climb to the top for a panoramic view over the bay. The island is named after the Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited the bay with President Ho Chi Minh in 1962.
  • Luon Cave, a wet cave you pass through by kayak or bamboo boat into a hidden lagoon ringed by cliffs.
  • The famous islets such as Fighting Cock, Incense Burner and Stone Dog, which the boats pass at lunchtime.

Ha Long is the right choice if this is your first time, if you want the "big name" sights, or if you only have one day. Boats leave from Tuan Chau or the Ha Long international cruise port, about 2.5 to 3 hours from Hanoi on the expressway, so a day trip is comfortable.

Lan Ha Bay: lagoons, villages and fewer boats

Lan Ha Bay feels wilder. The routes focus less on big caves and more on water, villages and swimming:

  • Dark and Bright Cave, a low passage under the mountain that opens into a lake enclosed by karst. You go through by sampan with a local rower or by kayak.
  • Ba Trai Dao and Tra Bau lagoon, sheltered spots that are popular for kayaking.
  • Cai Beo, an old fishing village of floating houses that boats pass slowly on the way into the bay.
  • Viet Hai village on Cat Ba Island, reached by bicycle or electric car through jungle and rice fields, with a fish foot spa and traditional houses.
  • Cat Ba National Park, where some overnight cruises stop at Trung Trang Cave on day two.

Lan Ha suits travellers who have seen photos of Ha Long and want something quieter, couples, and anyone who wants to swim and kayak more than walk through caves. The trade-off is time: Lan Ha day trips go to Cat Ba by road and ferry, so pick-up in Hanoi is earlier (around 7:00 to 7:40) and you get back around 20:30.

Day trip or overnight?

Day trip. Both bays work as a day trip from Hanoi. A Ha Long day cruise gives you around six hours on the water with Sung Sot, Titop and Luon Cave. A Lan Ha day trip gives you Cai Beo, Viet Hai village and kayaking, with more time in the water and less in caves.

Overnight. One night on board changes the experience in either bay: sunset on the sundeck, a cooking demonstration, squid fishing after dinner and Tai Chi at sunrise. Many 2-day cruises that start in Ha Long sail on into Lan Ha Bay, so you get a taste of both. If you are torn, an overnight cruise that covers "Ha Long Bay & Lan Ha Bay" is often the best answer. Which bay should you choose?

Choose Ha Long Bay if:

  • It is your first visit and you want the classic sights.
  • You have one day and want the shortest transfer.
  • You want big caves and the Titop viewpoint.

Choose Lan Ha Bay if:

  • You prefer quiet water and fewer boats.
  • You want kayaking, swimming and village visits.
  • You do not mind an earlier start for a day trip.

Tips for either bay

  • Wear shoes with grip for Sung Sot Cave and Titop; steps can be wet.
  • Bring swimwear, a hat and sun cream. Swimming and kayaking depend on the weather and may be cancelled in bad conditions.
  • Ask for vegetarian meals in advance; some boats need a day's notice.
  • Send your passport details on time. Some boats must declare guests to the port authority, so you may be asked for your name, date of birth and nationality before departure.
  • Expect changes in stop order. The bay management and the weather decide the final order on the day.
