Ninh Binh 2 Days: Tam Coc, Bich Dong & Thung Nham

Hoa Lu, Tam Coc and Mua Cave on day one, a night in a pool bungalow, then the quieter side of Ninh Binh: Bich Dong Pagoda, Thai Vi Temple and the green valleys of Thung Nham.

Start with the essentials: Hoa Lu, the 10th-century capital; Tam Coc's river caves; and the climb up Mua Cave to the top of Ngoa Long Mountain.

After a night in a bungalow with a pool at Trang An Holiday Retreat, day two slows down.

Bich Dong is a pagoda set into the mountain in three levels; Thai Vi is the old temple of the Tran kings; Thung Nham is forest, caves and a bird park. It's Ninh Binh at its most peaceful.

    1日目

    Day 1: Hoa Lu – Tam Coc – Mua Cave

    Pick-up in Hanoi's Old Quarter and the drive south to Ninh Binh by shuttle bus or limousine, with drinking water on board. First, Hoa Lu – Vietnam's capital in the 10th century under the Dinh and Le dynasties – and the temples of its kings. After a premium buffet lunch at Trang An Eco Restaurant, continue to Tam Coc, the 'Ha Long Bay on land', where the Ngo Dong River winds through three caves between rice fields and cliffs. Then climb more than 500 steps at Mua Cave to the top of Ngoa Long Mountain for a panorama over Ninh Binh. Sport bicycles are provided, and a raincoat or conical hat depending on the weather. The day ends at Trang An Holiday Retreat, where you check in to a bungalow with a pool.

    2日目

    Day 2: Bich Dong – Thai Vi – Thung Nham

    A day off the main trail. Bich Dong Pagoda is built into a limestone mountain, its lower, middle and upper pagodas climbing the rock face. Thai Vi Temple, near Tam Coc, honours the kings of the Tran dynasty. Thung Nham is a green eco-area of forest, caves and a bird park. Then the journey back to Hanoi.

    Bich Dong climbs the mountain in three levels, its lower, middle and upper pagodas set into the limestone itself.
