Ha Long Bay Cruise Tips: 15 Things to Know Before You Book

A Ha Long Bay cruise is on almost every Vietnam itinerary, and it deserves its place. Around 1,600 limestone islands and islets rise from emerald water, with hidden caves, floating fishing villages and quiet lagoons to explore by kayak. But with hundreds of boats, three different bays and prices from budget to ultra-luxury, choosing the right cruise is not easy. Our team at AmGo Travel works with the cruise operators every day. Here are the 15 things we tell our own guests before they book.

Choose the right bay for your Ha Long Bay cruise

1. Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay are different trips

All three belong to the same limestone seascape, and since 2023 the UNESCO World Heritage Site covers both Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba archipelago. In practice, each bay offers a different experience:
Bay Highlights Best for
Ha Long Bay Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top Island, Luon Cave First-timers who want the famous sights
Lan Ha Bay Quiet lagoons, white-sand coves, Cat Ba Island Kayaking, swimming and fewer boats
Bai Tu Long Bay Remote islands and fishing villages Travellers who want the calmest route

2. The famous sights are worth it, but they are busy

Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave is one of the largest and most beautiful caves in the bay, and the viewpoint on Ti Top Island offers the classic panorama. Both are popular, so the best cruises visit them early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

3. Routes and fees are regulated

Boats can only sail on official sightseeing routes, and each route has its own entrance fee set by the province. On our cruises the sightseeing fees for the scheduled route are normally included; we always confirm this on your booking.

4. A day cruise is fine if you are short on time

Ha Long is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Hanoi by expressway, so a day trip is possible. You get several hours on the water, lunch on board, a cave and kayaking. Good options: Ha Long Bay 1 Day Tour from Hanoi, Icon Cruise 7-Hour Day Cruise or Catherine Horizon Day Cruise.

5. Two days and one night is the sweet spot

Sleeping on board is the real magic: sunset on the sundeck, dinner surrounded by islands and a misty sunrise with tai chi. Most guests choose 2 days 1 night, for example on Amanda Ha Long Cruise, La Regina Grand Cruise or Stellar of the Seas Cruise.

6. Three days lets you reach the quiet corners

With 3 days 2 nights, the boat has time to sail deeper into Lan Ha Bay and the Cat Ba area, away from the day-trip crowds. Try The Au Co Cruise 3 Days 2 Nights or Indochine Grand Cruise 3 Days 2 Nights.

7. The best months are March to May and September to November

These months usually bring pleasant temperatures, calmer seas and good visibility. Summer (June to August) is hot and great for swimming but brings more storms. Winter (December to February) is cool and often misty, which gives the bay a mysterious atmosphere but limits swimming.

8. Storms can cancel cruises

During storm warnings, the port authority stops boats from sailing. This is for your safety. Ask about the cancellation policy when you book and keep one flexible day in your itinerary, especially from July to October.

💡 Book your cruise for the middle of your trip, not the last day before your flight. If the weather changes, you can still move it.

Choose the cabin and the boat

9. A private balcony is worth the upgrade

On an overnight cruise you spend a lot of time in your cabin at sunrise and sunset. A balcony cabin, especially on an upper deck, makes a huge difference.

10. Compare what is included, not only the price

Check whether the price includes the shuttle bus from Hanoi, sightseeing fees, kayaking, and drinks. Meals and activities are usually included on overnight cruises; drinks and spa treatments are usually extra.

11. Bigger boats are more stable, smaller boats are more personal

Newer, larger ships offer pools, spas and more stability, while boutique junks with fewer cabins feel more intimate. The bay is sheltered, so seasickness is rare on either.

Life on board

12. Kayaking is the best way to see the bay

Paddling into a lagoon or under a rock arch is the highlight for many guests. If you are not confident, choose the bamboo boat option, rowed by a local.

13. Sunset and dinner are part of the experience

Most overnight cruises have a sunset party on the sundeck, a cooking class and a multi-course dinner. Squid fishing at night is a fun extra on many boats.

Practical tips

14. Send your passport details in advance

Every passenger has to be registered with the port authority before departure, so the cruise will ask for your full name, nationality and passport number. Bring your passport on the day.

15. Pack light and smart

  • A small overnight bag: big suitcases can usually be left at the office or your Hanoi hotel.
  • Swimwear, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
  • Comfortable shoes with grip for the cave steps and the climb on Ti Top Island.
  • A light jacket from November to March.
  • Cash in Vietnamese dong for drinks and tips.
