Ninh Binh's classic day – Hoa Lu, Tam Coc and Mua Cave – then a night in a pool bungalow and a day in the old forest of Cuc Phuong, Vietnam's first national park.

The first day follows the road everyone should take once: Hoa Lu, the 10th-century capital; Tam Coc, where the Ngo Dong River runs through three caves; and the 500-plus steps of Mua Cave to the top of Ngoa Long Mountain.

The night is spent in a bungalow with a pool at Trang An Holiday Retreat.

Then the scenery changes completely. Cuc Phuong, Vietnam's first national park, swaps rice fields for old-growth forest on limestone hills – ancient trees, deep green and a quieter kind of Ninh Binh.

    Día 1

    Day 1: Hoa Lu – Tam Coc – Mua Cave

    Pick-up in Hanoi's Old Quarter and the drive south to Ninh Binh by shuttle bus or limousine, with drinking water on board. First, Hoa Lu – Vietnam's capital in the 10th century under the Dinh and Le dynasties – and the temples of its kings. After a premium buffet lunch at Trang An Eco Restaurant, continue to Tam Coc, the 'Ha Long Bay on land', where the Ngo Dong River winds through three caves between rice fields and cliffs. Then climb more than 500 steps at Mua Cave to the top of Ngoa Long Mountain for a panorama over Ninh Binh. Sport bicycles are provided, and a raincoat or conical hat depending on the weather. The day ends at Trang An Holiday Retreat, where you check in to a bungalow with a pool.

    Day 2: Cuc Phuong forest

    Leave the retreat for Cuc Phuong, Vietnam's first national park (established in 1962): old-growth tropical forest on limestone hills, with ancient trees and rich wildlife. After the forest, the journey back to Hanoi.
