Ha Giang Loop: 3 or 4 Days, and Is It Safe?

Ha Giang Loop from Hanoi: the 3-day and 4-day routes day by day, Ma Pi Leng, Lung Cu and Du Gia, safety habits, what to bring and how the night bus works.

Mountain road on the Ha Giang Loop

The Ha Giang Loop is the great road trip of northern Vietnam: a ring of mountain roads through limestone plateaus, H'mong villages and some of the most dramatic passes in the country, right up to the Chinese border. The two big questions travellers ask are whether to do it in 3 or 4 days, and whether it is safe. This guide from the AmGo Travel team in Hanoi's Old Quarter answers both, using the two Ha Giang Loop tours we run.

How the Ha Giang Loop works from Hanoi

Both of our tours start with a night bus from Hanoi. Pick-up is between 20:00 and 22:30 at the Opera House, the Old Quarter, My Dinh bus station or the Noi Bai airport crossroads. You reach Ha Giang city around 3:00 to 4:00 and rest at the guesthouse before breakfast. The motorbike, accommodation in local 1 to 2-star hotels and homestays, the listed meals, drinks during the tour and the entrance tickets in the program are included. At the end you take the bus back to Hanoi.

The 3-day loop: the classic route

The 3-day, 2-night loop covers the famous sights at a steady pace:

  • Day 1: Ha Giang to Dong Van. Km 0, Bac Sum Slope, Quan Ba Heaven Gate with its view of Tam Son town and the Twin Mountains, Can Slope and its lone tree, lunch in Yen Minh, then Tham Ma Slope, Lung Cam cultural village and the Vuong family palace, home of the most powerful H'mong family on the Dong Van plateau. Evening in Dong Van old town.
  • Day 2: Lung Cu and Ma Pi Leng. Ride to the Lung Cu flag tower on Dragon Mountain at the northernmost point of Vietnam (on Sunday mornings, add Dong Van market), visit Lo Lo Chai village, then take the Happiness Road over Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of Vietnam's four great mountain passes, with the view of the Nho Que River and the Tu San canyon. Night in Meo Vac.
  • Day 3: back to Ha Giang. Meo Vac (Sunday highland market), Mau Due, lunch in Quan Ba, a herbal foot bath with Dao medicinal leaves in Ha Giang, and the night bus to Hanoi at 20:30.

The 4-day loop: quieter valleys and homestays

The 4-day, 3-night loop adds the quieter south of the province and spends every night in a homestay:

  • Day 1: Du Gia (100 km). Motorbike practice after breakfast, then Thai An Heaven Gate, a suspension bridge on the Mien River, lunch at Ba Tien market village and sunset at Lung Ho. Homestay in Du Gia village.
  • Day 2: Meo Vac (100 km). Ngoc Long village, a bamboo ferry and rice fields, lunch at Mau Due, then Ma Pi Leng Pass and 30 minutes at the Sky Walk. Homestay in Meo Vac.
  • Day 3: Lung Cu (120 km). The Chinese border and the Lung Cu flag tower, while your guide tells the story of the border war. Homestay in Yen Minh.
  • Day 4: A Boong waterfall (80 km). A local guide takes you to A Boong waterfall, then a stop at Lung Tam, where H'mong families make traditional clothing. Back in Ha Giang at 16:00 to shower before the bus.

3 or 4 days?

Choose 3 days if:

  • You want the famous highlights: Heaven Gate, the Vuong palace, Lung Cu and Ma Pi Leng.
  • You are short on time.
  • You prefer hotels and a night in Dong Van old town.

Choose 4 days if:

  • You want shorter riding days and more time in villages.
  • Du Gia, the bamboo ferry, the Sky Walk and A Boong waterfall appeal to you.
  • You want every night in a homestay.

Is the Ha Giang Loop safe?

The roads are steep and winding, and the weather changes quickly, so safety is about good habits:

  • Always wear a helmet, and check the bike before you ride.
  • Ride slowly on steep sections and bends. Nobody wins a prize for speed on Ma Pi Leng.
  • Check the forecast before you go and pack for both sun and cold.
  • Be honest about your experience. If you have never ridden a motorbike, tell us before you book. The 4-day tour starts with motorbike practice.

What to bring

  • Warm clothes, even outside winter
  • Sneakers or shoes with good grip
  • A camera and a spare charger
  • Cash and some snacks
  • Money for the local fee: foreign guests pay a local procedure fee of 250,000 VND (about 10 USD) in Ha Giang, which is not included in the tour price
